CHAPTER THIRTEEN
IN SHOCK, GRAVV grabbed at the surge of arcane power and joined it with his own. One by one, he detached the spellstrands from the female’s body and sent them snaking into the flowing river of magma.
Now for the difficult part, he thought as he created a filter at the end of each strand. He wasn’t sure this part would work, but he had to make the attempt. It was their best chance.
The filter he created would siphon the intense heat of the molten rock and transform it into pulses of light which would, he hoped, be indistinguishable from the blue pulses of life-force which came from a living host.
With each strand he separated, he felt a bit of his ebbing strength return.
The process seemed maddeningly slow, and with each strand he moved, his fear of discovery increased.
Even with the return of his strength, he didn’t think he could survive a battle with even one of Chhry’stuulliound’s weaker minions, much less the pyrite himself.
He continued to work methodically. Although he tried not to rush, but rather to work steadily and accurately, he found himself moving too quickly and having to go back to correct mistakes all too often.
With a deep breath, Gravv placed the filter on the final strand and looked about the chamber. He was amazed to find they were still alone. Evidently, no one had yet been alerted to his activities here.
He breathed a sigh of relief and turned back to the female. Though she lay inert, arcane energy still came from her in a steady stream.
Either she had a tremendous abundance of arcane energy, or she showed an unbelievable amount of trust in him. Either option was a bit disquieting.
